Breast augmentation surgery or augmentation mammoplasty is a procedure that enhances the size, shape and fullness of a woman's breasts by placing silicone or saline breast implants. Breast augmentation can help restoring breast fullness that is lost after pregnancy or breast feeding, weight loss, age and can enhance self image and boost confidence by correcting the deformed or breast asymmetry.
Surgeon can discuss some options before performing the surgery such as inframmammary incision which is done in the increase under the breast, transaxillary incision in the armpit, around the nipple in periareolar incision depending on the factors like how enlarge breast can be done, patient’s health, type of implant etc.
Surgeons after examine the body may perform the surgery by making incision, lifts the breast tissues and creates a pocket or hole in the breast for placing the implant. Breast implant can be inserted into a pocket in two ways: a sub muscular placement where implant placement goes under the pectoral muscle which can take longer time to recover and can be more painful after the operation.
The other way of placing the implant is behind the breast tissue over the pectoral muscle which is called a sub mammary or sub glandular placement. After placing the implants surgeon closes the incision with layered sutures/ stitches in by using stitches, skin adhesives and surgical tape to close the breast tissue.
Painkillers will be given to relieve the pain after surgery. Post surgery information should be given for taking care of the breast, medicines, and follow up visits with doctors. Patient should immediately contact doctor in case of any sign of infection, fever, redness in the breast area, chest pains, unusual heart beats, and breathlessness. Post operation exercise may be advised by the doctor.
Breast augmentation implants are indented for lifetime and replacement can be required with time.
