Breast reduction also known as reduction mammaplasty is a cosmetic surgery in which extra fat is removed from the heavy breast and reduces its size, weight, glandular tissue to achieve a perfect breast size proportionate to the patient’s body. Heavy, large or disproportionate breast can cause discomfort to the patient. Patients having heavy breast can have neck pain, back pain, skin irritation, posture problems, pain or discomfort while exercising and lack of confidence. Breast reduction surgery can make patient’s breast size smaller, lighter, and perkier and improve breast symmetry by eliminating extra fat, tissues and sagging skin.
While most women are satisfied with this procedure, men who have condition like gyecomastia (abnormally enlarged male breasts) can also opt for this procedure. Before the procedure surgeon may get a mammogram done and examine the patient’s breast. He will consult patient and discuss about their medical condition or family history of any disease including if they ever have removed lump from patient’s breast. Surgeon may also ask about the lifestyle, habits like smoking, drinking or what medications does patient take. He may ask them to quit smoking for some time before or after the surgery.
Depending on the personal preference and health conditions, breast reduction surgery can be done under the general anesthesia. The surgery may take two to five hours or some cases may be more than that. Surgeon will make a incision around the nipple then downwards towards the breast to make keyhole size opening. After removing extra fat, skin, breast tissue, surgeon will reposition the nipple and stitch up the breast and wrap up in the gauge. Patient may need to wear surgical bra after the surgery for some time. There may be small tube in each breast to help drain blood and fluid for couple of days. Women can feel pain in the breast for the first few days’ then milder discomfort for some more time after the surgery. After swelling and pain subsides patient can go back to their normal routine except heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. There can be visible scars which may fade away with time. Surgery can also make the area of the dark skin surrounding the nipple (areola) smaller.
There can be some complications also along with this procedure like visible scars with swollen red skin which may take time to fade away but don’t get disappeared completely, uneven positioned nipples or breast that may not be of same shape and size, numbness in the nipples or breast that can last for few months, cannot breastfeed after the surgery in some cases.
Breast reduction or mammoplasty can give satisfied results making women feel lighter, firmer and comfortable with their body shape which can boosts their self confidence.
