Rhytidectomy, commonly known as facelift surgery is a procedure in a cosmetic surgery that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck by giving it more youthful appearance to the face.
Ageing people faces problems due to variety of factors including age, thinning of the skin, sun damage, smoking, stress which leads to the conditions such as wrinkles, loss of skin luster and elasticity, sagging of the skin on face and neck, lines near the collar bone and face, loose skin and excess fat. They prefer facelift surgery which can give them youthful facial appearance and turn back the clock to the younger version of them by tightening hanging skin around the jaw lines called jowls, remove deep creases around the mouth, nose and neck, excess fat under the chin. It can also tighten the underlying tissues and can be combined with other facial surgeries to enhance the other parts of the face such as cheeks, forehead, eyebrows and eyelids. Fat fillers may be advised to replace the lost fatty volume of the facial part. Some of the skin treatments such as IPL, dermabrasion, peels or laser may also improve the quality and texture of the skin.
It is very important to choose right doctor/surgeon to perform facelift surgery as it is a complex procedure which requires proper detailed knowledge about the facial anatomy, surgical techniques and have proper knowledge of aesthetic details. Patient must check the doctor’s profile, years of experience and training in facial surgeries, must check before and after surgeries images of his previous patients. Cosmetic surgeon may also review the patient’s medical history such as blood pressure, clotting of the blood, medications, drug use, allergies, and skin problems.
Facelift surgery can be categorized into two parts: mini –facelift and standard facelift.
Patients who have mild degree of jowling and sagging skin can opt for mini-facelift surgery which is a less invasive technique that requires a cosmetic surgeon to tighten deep facial tissues through small cuts/incisions generally located the hairline above the ear and natural creases near the ear. Structural tissues around the cheeks are lifted and tighten to correct the jaw line for patients who have mild amount of jowling and sagging skin. Mini facelift can be performed by using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s case.
Traditional or Standard facelift may address moderate to advanced aging around the face and neck. This procedure is more extensive than the mini-facelift surgeries, and thus requires more recovery time. A cosmetic surgeon can reposition the deeper tissues beneath the skin and remove excess skin form the face, jowling and sagging skin under the chin restoring a youthful contour to the face and neck through cuts located just behind the hairline, starting near the temple sides, and around the front of the ear.
There can be few risk and complications involved in the facelift surgeries that includes bleeding, bruises, anesthesia risk, damage to facial nerves, hematoma, infection, scarring, numbness, skin necrosis or tissue death, fever, pain and swelling around the face.
People should also keep it in mind that facelift surgeries will not stop the ageing process or change their fundamental appearance.
