The ovaries are important part of the female reproductive system. They produce eggs for fertilization and female hormones. Any abnormal cancerous growth occurs in the ovary is called as ovarian cancer. It the most common type of cancer occurs in female body and majority of ovarian cancers arises from the epithelium commonly known as outer lining of the ovary. It is difficult to detect in early stages due to the reason that two small organs on the either side of the uterus that is ovaries are deep within the abdominal cavity.
Ovarian cancer is usually caused by cells dividing and multiplying in an unregulated way, family history, age, infertility or fertility treatment, breast cancer, hormone replacement therapy, overweight, endometriosis and its symptoms may include a heaviness in the pelvis, bloating and pain the lower abdomen, unusual bleeding from the vagina, abnormal periods, gas, nausea, appetite loss, urinary problems.
Other symptoms of ovarian cancer can include:
• Upset stomach or heartburn
• Back pain
• Pain during sex
Treatments for ovarian cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or combination of both, targeted therapy or hormone therapy after diagnosed by the doctors through blood test, ultrasound, laparoscopy, colonoscopy, abdominal fluid aspiration, CT scan, MRI depending on the stage, age, overall health and some other factors.
