Many men feel embarrassment or self consciousness about their small size penis. Men seek penile enlargement for both physical and psychological concerns, to feel more confident about themselves, to correct issues such as performance anxiety or impotence that have stemmed from insecurities about their penis size.
Penile lengthening surgery, also known as phalloplasty is a new cosmetic surgery to enlarge the penis permanently. The surgery increases the non-erect length of the penis and the erect length to lesser extent. It is very difficult to know that how much actual length of penis can be gained through phalloplasty as it can vary from person to person. Patient should thoroughly research about the risks, results and side effects of this procedure and should choose a qualified surgeon with vast experience and good results in penile lengthening procedure.
This procedure is best performed on healthy patients and smokers are advised to give up smoking two weeks before the procedure and at least two months after the surgery. It will be more beneficial if they give it up completely as it can hinder or slow the healing process.
The surgery is performed under the influence of general anesthesia. Surgeon will make incisions at the root of the penis (where the penis and pubic area are joined). The internal part of the penis is released by dividing a ligament holding it in place. Surgeon will close the space with local tissue and no implant is used. The new extended penis is covered with skin taken from the penis or the pubic area. A muscle technique is used to ensure the long term effectiveness of the surgery. This procedure will not affect the normal functioning of the penis such as urination or sexual intercourse but can slightly change the angle of the erection from vertical to more horizontal. The complete procedure can take a 2-3 hours and patient will remain under observation for at least 3-4 hours before discharging. Post surgery traction is used to reduce the chance of retraction and provide more natural shaft skin.
Patient will be given some medications to control any pain and antibiotics to prevent infection for few days. Doctor will give some special instructions to follow such as patient may require wearing weights and wrapping the penis for 12 weeks during the daytime in order to keep the extra length gained during the operation. It is recommended that patient should wear loose cloths for some days for early healing. Patient should avoid going to work at least for a week depending on the type of job to minimize the excessive swelling, should avoid sexual activity at least for a month and strenuous activities or high energy sports for 6 week. Light activities can be resumed in a week.
Usually, there will be swelling and bruises in the penis and scrotum for 2-3 weeks and soreness in the groin and pubic area can lasts for about 10 days that can be managed by medications. The scarring of the pubic region can take some time to fade away but it is hidden and not usually a concern.
Even though the penile lengthening procedure is not complex and have low risk but still can have few side effects that may include:
• Unexpected bleeding
• Adverse reaction to anesthesia
• Damage to nerve endings
• Intense pain
• Shortness of breath
• Permanent loss of feeling would be a rare complication
