Rhinoplasty or nose job is surgery for rectifying shape of the nose size in relation to the facial balance, nose width and positions of the nostrils, visible humps or depressions on the bridge, drooping, upturned, hooked, enlarged or bulbous nasal tip, and asymmetry of nose. This surgery is also performed to improve an obstructed airway that helps in airflow and breathing. Deviated septum is the most common causes of breathing impairment which is achieved by adjusting the nasal structure to align it better. In rhinoplasty treatment, general or local anesthesia may be given as per the condition. This procedure is usually done as an outpatient procedure and sometimes patient may need to stay for a single night in the hospital.
The procedure requires surgeon to make incision or cuts to access the cartilage and bones that support the nose. It is usually made inside the nose to make it invisible after the surgery. Then some bone and cartilage may be removed or tissue may be added (can be from another part of the body or synthetic filler). Surgeon will rearrange and reshape the bone and cartilage and stitch back the skin and tissues over the nose. He will then place a splint outside the nose to support new shape of the nose while it heals.
Some patients may feel puffy or swollen around the eye area and bruised nose for several days. Doctor may suggest cold compress to reduce the pain and swelling. Patient may need to keep his/her head elevated for few days after the surgery.
